Walk The Talk Discussion Sheet
The Gospel of Luke-A Year With Jesus:
Luke 4:1-13

Week of January 22, 2012

Embracing Broken People (talking about ourselves):

  • 1. Luke begins this section by mentioned the Holy Spirit two times in verse one alone ("full of the Holy Spirit...led by the Spirit"). Is there a time that you have felt led by the Holy Spirit? Share an example with others.

  • 2. What are common areas of temptation for people your age? What are some temptations you experienced as a child? In what was are temptations for young people today similar? Different?

  • 3. Talk about a time that you were specifically tempted. Did you give into the temptation? Share a strategy you have for resisting temptation with others.

Equipping With God's Word (into the text):

  • 4. What do you think Luke meant when he wrote that Jesus was "full of the Holy Spirit"? In baptism, we are filled with the Holy Spirit as God gives the gift of faith. Is there another time in your life when you have been "full of the Holy Spirit"?

  • 5. How does Jesus immediately respond each time He is tempted? Think of and share a Bible verse that's especially meaningful to you in times of temptation.

  • 6. In Jesus' first temptation, He was tempted to use His divine powers for personal gain. Why was it important for Jesus to resist temptation in this area?

  • 7. Jesus' second temptation is the easy detour route away from the cross. Talk about a time in your life when following God's will was costly.

  • 8. Luke 4:13 says that the devil left Jesus until an opportune time. When were other difficult times in Jesus' ministry when He might have been tempted to take another path instead of the one that led to the cross?

Empowering Life Transformation  (how what we've talked about will change who I am):

  • 9. Satan's temptation strategy is similar with both Adam and Eve, Jesus, and us. (See Genesis 3) He often uses this three step approach:
  • a. He casts doubt ("Did God really say..." "IF you are..."),
  • b. He contradicts God's Word ("You will not die..." misquoting of Psalm 91)
  • c. He makes his own promises ("You will be like God" "...it will all be yours")

Talk about how you've seen the devil's scheme play out in your own life

  • 10. Knowing that temptation is not a sin helps us in our battles with temptation. Look up 1 Corinthians 10:13. Using this verse, develop a strategy for the next temptation you'll face.

  • 11. Share with another person an area of your life where you are tempted. Close your time together praying for one another. When you gather next week, ask the person how the battle went. An even better idea would be to talk in person, call, text, e-mail them encouragement during the week.
